Kenmore Electric Dryer Not Heating

Jeff Laskowski -- Wednesday, 22 August 2001, at 8:16 p.m.

Problem: Dryer not heating up, timer not running right

My dryer will not heat up at all and takes forever to complete a cycle, even on "timed dry." When running through a cycle, the timer dial will move, but the dryer does not shut off when the dial says that it should.

From what I've read on the internet, I've narrowed it down to the thermal fuse, thermostats (either cycling or high-limit), or the heating element. I had the heating element changed once before, about 4-5 years ago.

I've checked that all wiring connections are still intact and that the vent was not clogged (by pulling the dryer out, removing the hose, and running the dryer for an hour--still no heat).

Could someone please let me know if I'm on the right track and, if so, tell me what I have to do to narrow it down even further. From what I can see, you can't visually tell if the fuses and thermostats are working or not.

Thanks,

Jeff Laskowski

It may not be possible to tell visually if those components are working or not but they certainly can be tested for continuity (see the following link) to check if they're not, as well as can the element. That is how to determine which (if any) have failed. Of course, you will need a meter to do that.

Did you check the fuses for the dryer in the house fuse panel?

A timer failure may be related to the no heat condition but may be caused by something entirely different.

How do I test for continuity?

I assumed that one breaker in my breaker box covered the dryer. Is that not the case?

There should be 2 breakers for an electric dryer (see the link below), it could be a single 'double' breaker though.

In either case, it's possible for one to trip internally but still not appear to be tripped. In that case, resetting them and/or testing for proper voltage at the dryer should be done before tearing into the machine itself.

Can anybody tell me the most likely scenarios for lack of heat in an electric dryer?
