Locking mechanism locked w/o oven door closed!

Dave Paddy -- Saturday, 21 December 2002, at 8:16 p.m.

Help,

My frigidaire oven locking mechanism activated when the oven door was open. The lock light blinks continually and the clock gives a "dr" message. Do I need a new door motor? Is this just a fluke and can be reset somehow? I've tried unplugging the stove with the hopes that it would reset itself and unlock.

On many Frigidaire models, there is a door activated switch often mounted in the front face of the range body. It may be that just the door locked and the control sensed that the door switch was not activated by the door (hence the "dr" message) and shut down. The switch may be able to be activated manually which hopefully should allow you to unlock the door.

On some models, the switch for that control feature may be mounted on the lock/latch assembly in which case some disassembly of the range would likely be required. You can read about the different locking mechanisms which could be used at the link at the bottom of the page.

BTW. If you were contemplating self cleaning the range in advance of a big holiday dinner, you might want to put it off in case something happens to the range during the clean cycle and you're without it when you really need it. A couple of weeks to a month in advance of it being needed is often a better idea.

After self cleaning the range the door won't open. What might be the problem?
