jenn-air electric slide in oven

jack falbo jr. -- Wednesday, 20 November 2002, at 12:17 a.m.

i purchased this model electric oven and if i turn the temperature setting to 475 degrees or higher-say like 500 degrees, the oven lights and the display flickers off and on like a strobe light then the oven burners shut down.i assume that this oven should at least bake stuff at these temperatures.475-525 etc.like pizza-etc.the 220v is there and there is adequate air flow to the oven.i downloaded a wiring diagram that shows oven sensor resistance vs temp. but the diagram does not show any calibration procedures.what i have is an oven that only heats to 475 degrees and thats it.the specs show that it will go up to 600 degrees.any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.-thanks-jacko

by the way the model # is SCE 30600W
the problem occurrs while on convection or bake settings.it should get hotter than 475 degrees, shouldn't it?

Does the display flicker immediately or only after the oven has reached such a temperature?

Does it work normally on lower temperatures?

The range should be able to cook at whatever temperatures can be programmed into the electronic control.

If the temperatures are out, the control can usually be calibrated +/-35°F. Unless the temperatures are incorrect, no calibration should be necessary.

The temperature being out shouldn't cause such a flickering in any case.

the display and the relays flicker only at about 500 degrees.when baking, broiling, and in convection mode.the highest setting that i can punch in is 475 degrees.anything higher and it goes into flicker mode.

the oven works great at lower temperatures or anything below 475-480 degrees.

then it sounds like i defenitely have a problem.

yes i agree with you dan o. could it be a(faulty) hi-temp limit shutting the oven down.because at lower temperatures it works great.i will see what the display says tonight when i do some testing.i think it had dashes on the display when it was flickering but i will give some better details in my next post.thanks alot for the helpful information. it is definitely shutting down.can it be going into a safe mode or something?thanks jacko

Some models have an internal cooling fan (not to be confused with the convection fan) to cool components when the oven gets to a certain temperature. If used on your model and not functioning, it could result in too much heat in the control area causing the control(s) to act up.

I would say so.

It could be or the control system malfunctioning due to too high of heat in their area. Although I doubt such a thermal cut-off would affect the control display.

I've never heard of such a thing so I wouldn't bet on it.

thanks Dan O.,

I just did a test on the oven. The maximum allowable temperature setting that i can punch in is 550 degreesF. I first pulled the oven out from the counter to where i could access the rear panel. i took the panel off and put my meter on the bake element. to make a long story short, the oven heated to 550 with no problem when out in the open.the cooling fan kicked in at 500F. so i put the back vented cover back on and put the oven back in place in the counter to test. it worked fine again but i think that the oven electronics may act up from excess heat from inadequate air flow to the back of oven-where the digital board is located. i am not sure but it has worked twice at 550F. the louvers on the back panel are right up against the wall so i am going to put a vent behind the stove for fresh air. i will let you know (by posting) how it goes thank's again Dan o. from jacko
