Magic Chef Electric Oven F1 Code

Scott H. -- Saturday, 22 December 2001, at 11:36 p.m.

I have a 7 year old Magic Chef Electric Oven, Model 9875VRV. For the last 4 years, I have repeatedly gotton an "F1" error code and the control panel beeps. Sometimes it will stay powered 5 days without beeping, sometimes only 5 seconds. Pushing the stop/clear button temporarily resets the error code. Otherwise, the oven works fine. When the oven is heated, it is less likely to have the problem. I have to keep the circuit breaker off when I am not using it. Anybody know what causes this? Until I can afford to buy a new oven, is there a way to disable the beeping? This may have been discussed before, but the archives only go back 1 month.

Thanks,

Scott H.

On Magic Chef ranges, F1 usually indicated a defect in either the keypad or the electronic control. If the error shows when the keypad is disconnected from control, the problem is usually in the control. If the error ceases with the keypad disconnected, the keypad is usually the cause.

On some models the keypad and electronic control are 1 integral part in which case the whole control assembly usually has to be replaced to correct the problem.

The buzzer circuit may be able to be separated from the rest of the control. If wired to it, the wire(s) may be able to be cut. I don't know what results this would have on continued operation of the control but it certainly won't stop the error code from displaying.

I disconnected the ribbon cable from the keypad/front panel and so far I have not gotten the error code. So I think it is a probably a bad keypad. Unfortunately, the keypad is part of the front panel, so it will cost me about $150.00 to replace it. I have not abused the keypad in any way - it must be a defective design. Has anybody had any luck with out-of-warranty part cost reimbursement from Magic Chef, or am I out of luck.

Thanks for the help,

Scott

Some of the touch pads are available separately even though they may not be listed as a separate part on the parts breakdown. See the link below for more about this.

If the range was close to the warranty period I would have said there was a chance but since you said it is now 7 years old and the symptoms didn't even start until it was ~3 years old I doubt it, but you could always try.

Unfortunately, my touchpad is part of the front panel as shown below. I assume I have to change out the whole panel. This doesn't come apart, does it?

Thanks,

Scott

The old keypad can usually be peeled off the control panel and a replacement stuck on as long as the replacement's ribbon connector is on the same side as the original. (The replacement touchpads are self adhesive.) The location of the ribbon connector is the key as different configurations are used on the various models.

Thanks but I opted to replace the whole panel which was easier to just install. The error message hasn't return since but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks again.

Sorry to hear you could't make use of the slightly cheaper route of just using the replacement keypad.

Thanks for the follow up, have a Happy New Year!
