Amana washer leaking oil into tub

Glen Burchers -- Saturday, 25 August 2001, at 12:36 p.m.

My Amana direct drive washer is leaking a bit of oil into the tub. I suspect the agitator drive bell seal is leaking but I can't get the drive bell off. The agitator lifts off of the bell (friction fit) and the bell has a bolt on top. When I remove the bolt, I cant get the drive bell off. Tried prying it up and unscrewing it (thought it might thread onto a shaft.

Any thoughts on the leaking oil and on removing the bell?

Thanks, Glen

Hi,

Top load Amana washers are normally not direct drive...they have 1 belt, 2 belt & 3 belt versions.
The bell housing often gets frozen onto the trans shaft :( You can try some penetrating oil or rust buster into the hole on top and let them soak in to see if this helps loosen the housing...if not...it's hammer and chisle time = break it.

About the onli thing in a washer with oil is the transmission :(

Other stain trouble makers:
- fabric softener
- soap
- die transfer

I have not worked on the Amana direct drive washer but you may find the link below of some use.

Many of the big jobs on Amana washers require special tools to complete (at least to do them with a minimum of fuss.) They usually sell the major replacement components as 'kits' that often come with lots of instructions.

Pry, ugh, pry, ugh, pry, ugh... oh well. Chisel, hammer, chisel, hammer, snap...

The bell came off fine with the chisel. I found the broken seal and have ordered a replacement. Thanks for the help and especially the encouragement to use the brute force method. I would have been too timid otherwise.

I am glad you got it!!...soap-detergent, water, calcium + a little rust = one strong cement!!
