Whirlpool Gas Dryer Heat Problem

Ed -- Thursday, 5 July 2001, at 4:49 p.m.

Any of your thoughts on this would be appreciated.
The dryer, when cold, will start and produce heat for one cycle (ignitor comes on, gas ignites, burns for a couple of minutes, gas/flame goes out). Once that cycle completes, the ignitor comes on for up to 15 seconds, but no gas is released until the unit is shut off and cools down again. Then, it will fire up again for one period of time only. The sensor next to the ignitor seems to be working or ignitor would not fire. There is a sensor in the duct that leads into the dryer drum. I'm unsure what it's purpose is or if it's related to the problem. The gas valve coils could be a problem but I would think if they were, the unit wouln't fire up even once. Suggestions anyone?

Hi,

The coils are bad for working once or twice and quiting...once cooled down...the process starts all over again. Flame sensor is another trouble maker ( of the side of the flame tube ) but not nearly as common as the coils themselves. It is always a good idea to clean the venting and vent hood with any dryer problem as well!! Link below has some info that may help you out :)

Yes, both the older and newer valve coils (see the following links) experience similar problems. The only difference is that in the newer style valve, 2 of the 3 originals coils have been built into a single component. They're a smaller size now too.

Thanks for the feedback. It did turn out to be the coils that were at fault. I replaced them (which wasn't difficult at all) and it seems to be working find again. Thanks!
