Tappan PV440 Stove

Patricia Wagner -- Friday, 9 February 2001, at 9:49 p.m.

In 1959 when my husband and I were building our home we chose a stove 42 inches wide with two ovens at eye level, side by side -- one larger than the other. The burner top pulls out for cooking. I would like a new stove after 41+ years. My husband insists that a new stove would require a new kitchen, so when a burner burns out, he just replaces it and the stove keeps on cooking. It looks like the stove will never die.

Is it possible that you do make a stove that could replace mine without redoing the entire kitchen? I hope so. Looking forward to your reply.

Is it a "Tappan Fabulous 400" (or 500) model?

I have not seen any 42" ranges on the market or ones that have pull out drawers either, in a very long time. So finding a suitable replacement I think is doubtful. You may find a highend or commercial style model of that size but I'm sure not of that design.

There no reason the 'whole kitchen' would have to be redone, just the wall with the range. However, it may be difficult to match the existing cupboards and counter tops to look acceptable.

Vintage appliances are in style these days (see The Purchase : Retro Look Appliances). If yours is still in fairly decent shape and in close to working order, you could hang onto it for a while yet and impress visitors. >8~}

Functional parts (elements, switches, thermostats, etc.) may still be available or some sort of universal replacements used in place of originals if necessary. There are also companies which do custom refinishing if that is necessary. Check the appliance411 'Appliance Links' section under "Restoration" for some of the services which are available.

I myself would like to find a mid 60's Frigidaire Flair range of similar design to what you have. They just don't build 'em like that anymore.
