How to clean your own Window A/C

SVT -- Tuesday, 16 July 2002, at 7:58 p.m.

Someone must have experience with this. I have seen mention of having them professionaly steam cleaned, but Im sure there must be an effective way for a do-it-yourselfer to accomplish this.
Any ideas from the pros out here?

You can find general instructions at the link below but in order to get the very best performance out of your work, the use of high pressure steam or special chemical cleaners on the condenser and possibly a wire brush is usually needed to do the job properly.

IMO it is not a job that is that expensive or needed that often that a technician could not be hired to do a professional job. In most cases it only needs to be done once every 3 or so years except in high traffic areas.

Don't forget, the number one rule in do it yourselfer's handbook... we learned it along time ago... "Don't take your toys apart, if you can't put them back together".

they sell non acid cleaners at the appliance parts houses.. a gallon bottle will last nearly a life time.. get the kind that does not require rinsing, but I recommend rinsing anyway. be VERY careful using high pressure spray, it will bend the thin foil fins EASILY. probably best to only use a garden hose to rinse. and don't kill the grass!
