Thermostat problem

Matt -- Wednesday, 10 July 2002, at 2:56 p.m.

I have a 10,000 btu Emerson window unit that seems to have a thermostat problem. The thermostat prematurely turns off the compressor, and only the fan operates (while I wait, sweating!). I have pulled apart the front of the unit to attempt to diagnose the problem myself, to no avail (moving the bulb away from coils doesn't even seem to help). All the connections seem to be intact (according to my untrained eye).

Is there a way to bypass the thermostat so the compressor runs continuously? If that is unwise, how do I replace the thermostat? Thanks.

Are you certain it is the thermostat shutting down the compressor and not something else?

Yes it can usually be done by joining the 2 wires attacked to it

: If that is unwise,

For an extended period of time, yes it is unwise IMO. For a short time during testing say, it can usually be done without a problem.

A thermostat can usually be replaced by accessing the control area by removing the cabinet and then removing the control mounting panel. The rest is usually self evident (removing the wires and thermostat retaining screws). Reverse the process to install the replacement.

*ALWAYS disconnect power from an appliance before servicing it!!
