AC air smell

Peg -- Tuesday, 9 July 2002, at 10:28 p.m.

My window units--1 brand new Panasonic and the other 2 years old--both seem to develop a mold/must that gets worse as time goes on. I had the older unit cleaned this year. Both units took just 1 month to start smelling. It is getting worse. What can i do?

I don't know but you may be able to spray a disinfectant like Lysol into the front while the fan is running (making sure it won't blow right back into your face) if the odor is coming from there. I don't have any other suggestions I'm afraid.

Thanks. I read somewhere else that a little bleach in the pan might help?

If that is where the odor is coming from but that is outside and would not normally cause any odors inside. There is a small trough at the base of the evaporator coil and a drainage tube leading outside to the main drain pan. You could try some in there when the unit is not operating (otherwise it would just get flushed out fairly quickly). I don't believe bleach should effect any of the appliance's components.
