Electrohome Front Panel Controls

Sean -- Wednesday, 3 July 2002, at 4:48 p.m.

I own an Electrohome window unit, unknown age or BTU amount. On the front panel there are controls for the fan, for the exhaust, and for the temperature. I'm wondering about two things.

1) The temperature knob rotates through six settings. Setting 1 (all the way to the left) has a "thermometer" picture with blue "mercury" that completely fills the thermometer to the top. Setting 6 (all the way to the right) has a thermometer picture with very little blue "mercury" in it. Would I be correct in assuming that setting 6 is the coldest? Does this thermometer with very little blue "mercury" in it signify a colder cool, so to speak?

2) Can someone please explain to me the usage of the exhaust vent? The A/C unit has two settings, one to exhaust air and one to recirculate it. Which one is used when, and why?

Thanks in advance!
Sean

Yes, the higher the number, the colder the setting.

When open, a small amount of room air will be exhausted to the outdoors. If you were having a party you could open it in the hope of exhausting some of the smoke (or what not) in the room to the outside. I really believe that because of the size of these vents, it would make very little difference at all.

However, it does exhaust air that has already been cooled. Having it open will reduce the cooling ability of the air conditioner that much. In very hot times, every little bit of cooling you keep in the room helps.
