compressor question

S. Nomen -- Tuesday, 2 July 2002, at 8:58 a.m.

Hello,

I'm writing about a 22 year old Emerson Quiet Kool, Model 10W4XE.

This unit cools well, and the compressor cycles correctly with the thermostat.

After running for a long time on a hot day, the compressor no longer runs. I assume this is the overheat protection?

After a 30 minute rest by powering off the unit or turning the thermostat to warm, the compressor again runs normally.

The unit is a wall-through and not easily accessible from the outside, and probably has not been cleaned in some time. Is a dirty condenser the likely culprit?

What else should be checked? [I am a qualifed technician, but not an AC expert.]

Thanks *very* much.

It could be that the compressor is overheating due to the condenser being plugged. A window/wall air conditioner should be professionally cleaned at least every 3 years or every year in used in a high traffic area. If you can not remember the last time it was cleaned, it almost certainly needs it.

It should be tested at time of failure to see which component is the cause. It should be easy enough to isolate the overload protector to see if it is the culprit.

: accessible from the outside,

In order to do a proper cleaning, the whole unit must be removed from its sleeve and not just tackled from the outside.
