: have an old white-westinghouse air conditioner
: installed in a wall. can see filter is
: filthy but cannot remove the plastic
: frontpiece to access the filter. no screws
: or holding clamps are visible -- can pull it
: away a bit at edges but something (?) is
: holding it in place. it is marked
: "Mobilaire". model #420107.
: suggestions will be appreciated.
Many air conditioner grills simply(?) pull off from the front by gripping its outer frame. There are often spring clips holding the grill in place but do not need to be touched as tabs on the grill just slide into these retaining clips.
On some models (not necessarily White Westinghouse) the grill must be pushed down slightly from the top and them pulled forward, as the retaining clips on these are mounted at the bottom and force the grill upwards to hold it in place.
You could try to find a local retailer selling a current comparable model and ask to view the owner's manual to get an idea how it may have to be done. Or take a photo of your unit to a local appliance repair depot to see if they can offer any suggestions.
