Jenn-aire Gas Cooktop Igniter

Randy -- Tuesday, 7 January 2003, at 3:40 p.m.

We've got a 5 year old Jenn-aire gas cooktop (4 burner model). Last night after trying to light one of the burners, the igniter on that side keeps on sparking, even after the control knob is not on "light". I disconnected the power cord and then plugged it back in and the igniter is still sparking. I know that there is a replacement part for the igniter assembly (cord and all). Can the problem be anything other than the igniter assembly? Is this a repair I can tackle on my own? (I'm a moderate do-it-yourselfer that will tackle most projects if I have instructions.)

Is it turned on at all at when it happens or even when it is completely off?

If even when all burners are turned completely off, it could be that the spark switch mounted on one of the burner valves is shorted (possibly cause by spillage), a shorted wire or a defective spark module. I would think the first is the most likely.
