smooth top or coil?

Joanne -- Tuesday, 31 December 2002, at 3:32 p.m.

I was told by an appliance store that the market for electrical coil cooktops are going to be taken over by smooth glass top ones. It will soon be difficult to get replacement and services.
Is this true?

I doubt it will ever (at least for the next 20-30 years) be difficult to get replacements and service.

While consumers seem to be purchasing ranges with glass tops more often these days, there are tens of millions of coil element ranges still in use in North America and no one is going to give up providing replacement parts or services for them easily (or soon).

I think that's the same line sales people were feeding everyone when Euro-style solid element ranges were popular (until that craze died off).

In my professional opinion, you have nothing to worry about if considering that option for a new stove. Coil elements is what I myself will insist on for any next range, they're much simpler and less costly to repair. There's also no expensive glass to break (and they do break!).
