GE XL44 gas range burner swapout?

Bill H -- Friday, 27 December 2002, at 5:11 a.m.

I have a GE XL44 JGBP24 range, which has 4
burners, each of which is 9000 BTUs.
Rather than replace the range (only about 5 years
old) I was curious the cost and difficulty of
swapping out / upgrading one or more burners.
My wife does a lot of Asian cooking, which requires
a very hot flame, and the 9000 BTU burner just
doesn't keep up.

Thoughts on changes, or is it time to buy her
a range for a Valentine's Day gift?

Thanks
Bill

It is not usually the burner itself that controls the BTU of the burner but instead the burner orifice. You can usually only get a replacement orifice that would be the same as originally comes on the appliance when new or one for propane in a conversion kit.

A replacement orifice may be able to be found elsewhere or the one already on the range enlarged but I don't know where'd you'd look for a replacement or how much or how to enlarge the existing one. I doubt such a modification would be recommended by the manufacturer nor whether the burner itself would be able to handle the increase in BTUs.

BTW. XL44 is just a style name, JGBP24 is only part of a model number. To get any parts for it you would have to provide the exact and complete appliance model number as printed right on the appliance's model and serial number tag.

Hi Dan,

I also have a GE XL44 JGBP90MEB5BC gas range with two 12,000BTU, one 9000BTU and one 5000BTU burners. I would like to replace the one of the 12,000BTU burners with a largest one possible for this stove..

Did you have any luck replacing your burner?
Any help/info is appreciated.
Thanks
Sri
