McClary electric range temperature issues

Rick -- Sunday, 20 October 2002, at 10:12 p.m.

Hi...
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

We have a McClary self-cleaning oven that we bought brand new three years ago. It has never seemed to be properly set for temperature, but either we're getting more frustrated or it is getting worse.

The oven heats up ok, but then while it cooks, it seems to have a much-too-big interval between the temperatures where it turns on and off. It seems to cool way down below the set temperature before kicking in the element, and then to go way above the set temp before turning off again. On cookies it's hell -one batch burned on the bottom before time's up, the next still uncooked after 2x time. 2-hr roasts sometimes take 3+ before they're done.

Is it possible to reset the interval on the thermostat to try and keep the temp flucutating no more than 10%, or is it better to replace the thermostat?

By the way, it has a digital clock/timer on it, but the oven function selector and the temperature selector are knobs. I haven't found the model number either under the fuse lid or inside the oven door.

Thanks again,

Rick

Hi,

Dial controlled oven temp...the temp can be changed up or down a little bit...but for a too w i d e of a temp swing, no...usually = new oven control time.

Do make sure the temp probe ( metal bulb in the oven is clipped into it's holder(s) properly.

Model# should be down on the front frame behind the pots and pans drawer.

Thanks Jeff. Is replacing the Oven temp control an do-it-yourself project for someone fairly good at handywork, or does it require special tools & talent to manage?

Thanks for your help,
Rick

Howdy,

**Is replacing the Oven temp control an do-it-yourself project for someone fairly good at handywork, or does it require special tools & talent to manage?**

Do-it-yourself project - sure.
Fairly good at handywork - sure.
Requires talent - nope, I can do it ;-)
Special tools - nope.

With the power off and the correct part, this is usually a fairly easy job.
