Caloric gas range not heating properly

Warren -- Sunday, 13 October 2002, at 5:05 p.m.

We have a Caloric Prestige Series gas range. The oven burner will ignite when you first turn it on, heat to cooking temperature, then shut off and not ignite again. You can smell gas after the burners shut off. It appears that the igniter is working as it is glowing the whole time.

Any suggestions on what is wrong?

Sounds like a weak glow coil igniter to me! They can glow red and still not work.

Yes, your glow bar igniter can glow red and still be bad!!

I agree with Jeff that a defective ignitor often exhibits those symptoms. What may happen is that even though the ignitor is still glowing, the oven heat affects its resistance enough to change its temperature so it's no longer hot enough to ignite the gas when released by the oven valve.
