Timer on GE Range (JSP28G)

Joe -- Friday, 2 August 2002, at 10:39 a.m.

We have a GE JSP28G*D1 range (from about 1983) that has one of those mechanical odometer-type clocks and dials for the timer and clean start/stop times. It has gone out (buzzes all the time and the clock has stopped). There is a replacement available from GE, however, I'm finding conflicting information: it appears that WB19X10007 is a digital compenent replacement for the old mechanical timer.

Does anyone have experience replacing one of these? Since the part is different, I wonder if it will install easily (with existing wires, etc.)?

I don't know about how easy it will be to install the replacement but it should come with installation instructions. I have heard that they can be more difficult to install *in some models* depending on how those models were designed.

An alternative might be to take the original mechanical clock to a local appliance parts supplier to have them send it away for repair. This usually takes about a week to 10 days of which time you will be unable to utilize the range's oven. At least when you get it back it will be the same old clock and you won't have to learn how to work it all over again which is what you'd have to do with an electronic replacement.

Thanks for the input... I ordered one from the Repair Clinic you linked to and it did come with instructions (which were a little cryptic). The timer was fairly easy to install except for two things:

1) The wiring contacts on the old timer were on the right side and the contacts on the new timer are on the left side, so several wires didn't reach. Luckily they sent wire extensions to solve this.

2) I did not order a new crystal cover for the new timer because the old one cleaned up okay. Perhaps a new crystal would fit into the new timer better, but there was no way to attach the old crystal to the new timer. It just took two of us to hold everything into place until I got the screws tightened. Looks okay now.

Finally, you were right about it operating differently. And the instructions were very brief (but after several guesses, we figured it all out). It'll take a little getting used to. We did had one scare though: When trying the self-clean function, the latch release worked and the oven locked and the cleaning occurred. But one hour after the cleaning was over, the oven would not unlock (the latch release would not work). No help from the instructions, so I kept guessing. The only way to unlock it was to initiate the cleaning timer again and then press the latch release (thereby interrupting the second cleaning cycle before it got going).

Glad to hear you figured it out and are up and running again and with a fancy new digital control to boot! Thanks for the follow up.

That is a pretty nifty kit - especially since many (most?) or the mechanical clocks are not available any longer. I know technicians that install them in all different makes of ranges not just G.E. made ones so it looks like it was made fairly adaptable.
