Amana cooktop ignitor problem

BJH -- Monday, 15 July 2002, at 1:29 p.m.

I have an Amana 4 burner gas cooktop that's about 5 years old. It's worked great up until the other day when, for no apparent reason, the ignitors started to pop every 30 seconds or so when the knobs are all off. This is puzzling as it just started by itself. No one was even around it when it started. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what is causing it?
Thanks for any help.

It happens fairly regularly on all brands of gas ranges and cooktops.

It could be that something was spilled and seeped down one of the burner valve shafts and got into the electrical switches there, or liquid from cleaning has gotten into one (or more) of them. It could also be that one of the ignitor leads has shorted to ground but a defective spark is the most likely cause (besides spillage) IMO.
