GE-Kenmore Oven Control Tech Question

Rose -- Sunday, 21 April 2002, at 6:09 p.m.

Hello

In a GE/Kenmore range the oven temp is controlled by rotary knob. When the knob is rotated the temperature appears on the Control Panel LCD. Now, if the control panel go out or break, will the oven still function?

Hi,

Any thermostat that works in conjunction with an electronic control will most likely NOT function if the electronic control portion fails. In the case you mentioned, I would think the rotary control is itself an integral component of the electronic control and not a separate part at all.

How good are they

How reliable are those control panels?

I have not seen any actual data on the quantity of products of this type sold verses the failure rate (for any brand) but do know that they can be difficult to diagnose problems and extremely expensive to replace when they do fail, which is why I recommend an extended warranty for such products.

Unfortunately, you'd be hard pressed to find a range model that does not use electronic controls these days. The manufacturers claim that is what most potential customers are "asking for" but I'm fairly confident it has more to do with the ease of which they can be installed during the manufacturing process when compared to the old design of controls.

BTW. I have noted that GE built appliances seen to have among the highest cost for replacement parts of the popular appliance manufacturers.
