1950's Tappan gas range

Bob Brumer -- Thursday, 28 March 2002, at 8:34 p.m.

I have an old Tappan range that we just love but the oven temp. setting valve dosen't work. It goes to 500 degrees all the time. I'm not sure what is wrong or what parts I need. It seems to be a common range but the model # found on the oven valve control plate is 63-16 and nobody recognizes it. The "Repair Clinic" reffered me to this site for help. HELP !!! (Please)

Hi,

The actual range model number will be on the body of the range itself and not on any one particular part. The number you supplied looks like just a date code that particular part was manufactured which in most cases it would suggest that part was made the 16 week of 1963.

It sounds to me that the cause of your symptom would either have to be a defective oven thermostat (most likely) or shorted wiring. In order to see if a replacement thermostat was available for your range, you would either need to supply the model number of the whole range (see the Appliance411 'Repair Parts' section for where to locate it) or the part number off the original part (if there at all).

Without one or the other, it will be next to impossible to see if a replacement is still available or not.

Thank you for your response, I've checked all the places suggested and still find no tags or stamping other than the one I previously noted. How does the termocouple control the as valve once the temperature dial is set?

The thermostat's sensor bulb is filled with a gas that expands when heated. This expansion causes a bellows inside the thermostat to also expand. This bellows in turn either causes electrical contacts to open shutting off power or closes a valve shutting off gas flow to the oven.

If you can not find either the appliance's model number or the part number of the original, there is little chance of getting a replacement. You could try sending the original control to the company lined below to see if they can repair it for you.
