Magic Chef Oven

Alan -- Tuesday, 12 March 2002, at 9:32 p.m.

Hello,

My 1989 Magic Chef oven (Model S64F 3 CKXW) just stopped working. The broiler works fine. The electric oven ignitor glows, however, there is no gas flow to the burner/pipe. I assume this is an electric gas valve problem. The dual valve controls both the gas flow to the broiler and to the oven. It would appear that the oven portion of the valve is defective.

Can anyone (generally) confirm this or any other defect which could explain my problem. While pricey ($150) it appears to be a relatively straight-forward replacement (comments?)

Many thanks for any response, Alan

Hello,

It has been my experience that the oven valves in that type of system fail very rarely and the dual valves even less. I have sold only 4 in all my years selling replacement parts and every one of the customers returned trying to bring them back (see Appliance411: Repair Parts section "Don't be surprised!")

Oven ignitors can glow but not produce the proper resistance to open the oven valve. Since there is a separate ignitor used for the broil and bake, it can usually be easily verified by interchanging the two. A defective oven ignitor is responsible for 80-85% of delayed ignition and oven not lighting problems on that type of oven ignition system - (see the following link).

Thanks for the reply. I don't have an ammeter to properly test which is the cause so although I was still skeptical, I replace the oven ignitor fist and it fixed the problem!

Thanks for saving me a bundle (buying the gas valve and then having to buy the the ignitor also)!

Thanks again
