Old Magic Chef - F4 Code

Suzen -- Saturday, 23 February 2002, at 5:12 p.m.

Recently received the F4 error code on my Magic Chef Model 59FN-5TVW, Ser# 15C038856866. From the information I've been able to locate, I believe the problem is an open or shorted sensor. Can you help me with part numbers on all parts I may need to troubleshoot this, and the recommended procedure?

Do you recommend servicing this unit or investing in a new one? Sounds like other folks have had some reoccuring problems with the Magic Chef line and are at odds with Maytag now having ownership.

Great site, excellent responses, thanks in advance for any assistance anyone has time to offer:)

You shouldn't need any parts to troubleshoot the appliance. An ohm meter or continuity tested may be required though.

F4 usually indicates a fault in the oven sensor or its wiring. If the wiring going to it is Ok, chances are that the sensor needs to be replaced. The oven sensor can usually also be tested for continuity and should read about 1100 ohms when at room temperature.

A replacement oven sensor is not so expensive (see the link below) that replacing the whole oven should be necessary at this time nor justify possibly having to remodel your cupboards to accept a different model oven. Just my opinion though.

Magic Chef Oven Sensor

Magic Chef will live again!

Dan O,

Thanks a million, the repairman was going to replace my keypad for $300+, but he obviously would have to have tried the sensor as well. I'll start with the sensor and work back to a fully operational unit. The house and range aren't even 13 years old, so we'll get this Magic Chef cooking again(=:)

Thanks for the quick and thorough response, we were out to dinner . . . maybe tomorrow we'll eat in!

Have a great weekend!
Suzen
