Chambers/Whirlpool gas cooktop

Tom -- Tuesday, 2 October 2001, at 10:23 p.m.

I own a chambers cooktop model No. GSU-33P bought in 1986. I understand that this product was made by Whirlpool. Two of my 4 burners light. My "electronic intermittent device" clicks on the 2 nonburning burners but wont light and no gas is allowed through to use a match. What is the problem(s) and where do I find the parts to repair it. The site you list on the last Chambers question does not list Chambers as a product part they carry. DESPARATE IN CALIFORNIA!

I don't know if Whirlpool owned Chambers at that time yet or not. They did eventually acquire the company.

That is a good question.

The gas should flow to surface burners whether the electronic ignition system works or not. The only thing I can think of that would stop it would be a bad gas valve(s) located beneath the knob(s), unless some damage was done to the tubing the gas travels in. There should be nothing else in the gas system to my knowledge to stop it.

The second thing is that if no gas is getting to the burners, there's no way they're going to light of course. I think you should focus your attention on getting gas to the burners in question.

If the site was the RepairClinic, they should be able to get any parts that are still available.

Chambers is now owned by Whirlpool so try selecting that brand instead. You may have to contact them with the model number of the appliance and have them manually look up whatever parts you determine to be the eventual problem.

Your response was both insightful and informative. The information about the gas valve was really helpful. I was thinking that the ignition switch had a cutoff valve for the gas if it failed to work.

I will contact the Repair Guru at the Repair Clinic today to see what parts they can still get. Once again, THANKS

While that is true for most oven ignition systems, it is not usually the case for surface burners which usually just have a direct flow of gas once the valve is opened.
