Magic Chef-Temperature Off

Sheila Schoonmaker -- Sunday, 23 September 2001, at 3:45 p.m.

This is in regards to the Magic Chef oven model # 34 HN 3, which is 10 years old. The Temperature Sensor wire was changed due to previously having the error codes F4 and F2. Now no error code comes on anymore, but the oven does not seem to rise higher in temperature than about 200 degrees no matter how high the temperature control is set. Is there any way to adjust the temperature setting or does another part need to be purchased? Thanks ~

It would be very unusual for an oven thermostat's calibration to fail in such a way as to only allow the oven to heat to a specific temperature. Before an oven thermostat should ever be adjusted, all other possibilities should be dismissed.

Have you checked to make sure the oven burner is actually lighting?

If only the oven ignitor is glowing but no burner flame is present, it could result in the oven only getting to that temperature. The most common cause (~70-80%) of this symptom is a faulty oven ignitor (yes, even if it still glows), the next is the oven gas valve.

Hi Dan O.,
Thank you for your response! Upon checking the oven again, the oven got very hot and no error code came on. A fire was burning properly at the bottom of the oven, but I didn't use the oven then even though I let it burn for about 15-20 to watch to see if it worked fine. It did work fine then, but the next time I went to use it for baking...I set the temperature to 375 degrees. As soon as it beeped to temperature, the F2 error code began beeping again and again every time I hit the stop/clear button. I had to shut of the fuse to stop the beeping and error code.
What could be the problem now? Do you have any advice as to what to do? Thanking you in advance for whatever help you can offer.

Sincerely, Sheila S.

Depending on the actual design of your model, F2 could indicate a faulty oven sensor (or the wiring leading to it) or a faulty clock.

How long ago was the sensor replaced? If less than 1 year, it should be covered under the manufacturer's replacement part warranty if it is defective again. In that case, you would have to have the same person/company back to check it.

If longer then that, I suggest you contact an authorized Magic Chef (or Maytag as they own Magic Chef) service depot to check it.

If you want to delve into it yourself, the oven sensor should be about 1100 ohms when at room temperature. Of course, the cause of intermittent problems are the usually the hardest to track down, even for trained service technicians.
