Jenn-Air stove top too hot!

Toni M -- Saturday, 28 July 2001, at 5:49 p.m.

My Jenn-Air stove top is 10 years old. The burners get incredibly hot and stay hot for a very long time even after I turn them off. A couple of them will even boil on the low temperature. I can't ever simmer because the heat is always too high. What is the problem?

Hi,

**The burners get incredibly hot and stay hot for a very long time even after I turn them off.**

What kind of elements? coil, solid cast, glass top?

Coil usually cool off quickly, glass are a little longer to cool but cast iron burners can still boil water for 10-15 minutes after being shut off as they hold there heat.

**I can't ever simmer because the heat is always too high.**

This sounds like a possible switch(s) problem as they are usually what controls the on & off for cycling the heat on the burners & the heat output.

As Jeff has said, if the element only goes to high when turned on to any setting, the problem is most likely a defective burner switch.

If you have an Adobe Acrobat .PDF file viewer plugin in your browser, you can read how the most popular of these surface element switches operate at the link below.

How long the elements remains hot after they are turned off will depend on the type of elements they are, also a Jeff suggested. This couldn't be a new occurrence with a 10 year old stove?
