34 inch cooktop

Julie -- Thursday, 28 December 2000, at 1:31 p.m.

I need to replace my Westinghouse 34" cooktop. I can't seem to find any 34" cooktops and I don't think Westinghouse makes them anymore. Can anybody help??

About the only odd size cooktops I've seen currently available are 32" or 36" wide. You may have to go with a larger one or a smaller and try to find a trim kit (see the link below) to make up the difference.

You could always repair the one you have as most functional should still be available. If it's the color that's the problem, there are several companies that can refinish range tops with a suitable finish.

Check the Appliance411 Links section under 'Restoration' for links to some of them.

Thank you! I have found one 32" from Frigidaire. Unfortunately, repairing is probably more expensive than replacing (it's the wiring). Would it be easier to get a smaller one and a trim kit or get a larger one and cut the opening larger. The counters are about 33 years old and I think they're formica or laminate.

The trim kits I linked to state that they are not to be used to support the top but only to fill in the gap. It depends on what will be there to hold up a new smaller top. A larger one might be a better idea.

BTW, wiring is the simplest and usually least expensive thing to replace. If it were me and the rest of the top is in good shape, I'd seriously consider repairing it. Not only do you have to consider the cost of the new top, but the cabinet work or trim that will also be required.

You may even be able to save a couple of bucks if you took the top to a local service agent to have the work performed there. But in the end it's really your decision.
